Yes they are transferrable. My brother got one on a used f150 (still had little warranty went purchased) and several months after original warranty expired the truck had a major transmission problem. Cost my brother $100 and that's it. He was sure glad he listened to me. Since then, no major problems.

I knew someone with a Chevy pickup that had to have his trasmission replaced and luckily he had an extended warranty. I bought an Extended warranty after I bought my Subaru used. I have used it to replace the stereo twice. Not sure if I got my money back but the peace of mind is sometimes nice.

If you are going to keep the car outside of the standard warranty period, then yes, go for it. If you are not, then the only reason you should go for it is resale value. When comparing cars I've sold in the past to similar configurations, I've always sold for more and the only real difference was the extended warranty.

Keep in mind that you do not need to purchase the warranty now. I have purchased extended warranties 10,000 miles after I bought the car for the same price... so you shouldn't need to decide now.

For the Altima, I would say not worth it. Maybe if you are buying a truck/SUV, using it to haul a boat/trailer, it might be worth it.

Thanks for your input.
If it is a warranty provided by a 3rd party company arranged by the dealership then run from it like the plague. You stand a high chance of getting ripped off by it.

If it is a warranty that comes from Nissan then it might be worth it. However manufacturer's extended warranties can be purchased up to a year after you take delivery on the car. The reason this is important is that you don't have to buy it from the dealer where you bought the car and it is negotiable. So wait until after you get your car and buy this on the internet. You can usually work a much better deal this way. All of the manufacturer's dealers are required to honor it.

Make sure you check the terms in any case against how you plan to own the car. Many extended warranties kick in when the original one expires. While this might seem obvious, what isn't so obvious is they will kick it in when you go over the mileage limit of the original warranty. This is a shocker to most when they go in and find out their extended warranty ended a year or so before they thought.

Does it cover parts and labor?

When we bought our new Honda, the guy asked if we wanted the extended warranty. I asked "Well I thought Hondas were reliable, you mean it's gonna break down after 3 years? Then I don't want the car. I'll go buy a Toyota then."

The sales guy was stammering and stuttering after that.

Most of them have so many loop holes in them that when you need a repair they often say that its not covered,or only part of your required repair is covered and you end up paying a jacked up bill anyway...too late then cause they done got your money. If the maker wont stand behind its car 100% no more then 3/36 you need to find another maker.

An Altima will go well over 200K. I sold my 1998 Altima to my neighbor and he put 20K miles on it in 9 months. He's now at 205K. No issues.
