Yeah that's what first alarmed me. I was looking for any more updates for peopel that lvie down there. It looks like they are extending the airport 2000 ft. and relocating it on goldmine rd. which will basically be in the backyard of St. John's Forest.
What is the real deal? I hear of plans of expansion for large commercial jets.
Thanks!
Tried to find a good source to update you on this info. Here's the link to the Monroe Regional Airport, but it doesn't appear it has been updated recently:

I did find this link to the February, 2007, minutes of the NC Aeronautics Council Meeting with a brief paragraph about the Monroe Airport Expansion:
"Mr. Drew Boggs, of the Monroe Airport Commission, was introduced. Mr. Boggs gave a short briefing on the economic development and future improvement plans for the Monroe Airport. The presentation improvements include realigning Goldmine Rd., lengthening the runway 7,000 ft., strengthening the runway to 78,000 lbs. DW, expanding the Terminal Building, building new hangars, ramp and taxiways. The estimated cost to accomplish these improvements was estimated at $24,000,000."
Your two most likely sources for current info would be the Enquirer Journal newspaper, based in Monroe, NC, and the Union County edition of the Charlotte Observer newspaper.
You should be able to find the Charlotte Observer Union Neighbors edition at http://www.charlotte.com/263 (broken link)
The runway lengthening has been in the works for a long time. The actual runway will only come to about the location of the current Goldmine Road. The rest of the area will be needed for the approach landing light system.

So, the runway will go from 5,500 feet to 7,000 feet when completed?
At this point the airport, even with the expansion, would not be able to handle large commercial aircraft. It will however, and should, start to increase the number of larger corporate jets. The expansion will take the end of the runway closer to several neighborhoods south of the airport. The expansion of the airport has been in the works for many years and should bring increased revenue to the city in the future.

Is the Drew Boggs mentioned above connected to Boggs Paving, Inc., which was awarded the project?
