Not sure. I was staying in Newark for a few months back in '99 and this is the route I took to come home to Charlotte. Less congested and just a better scene.
Do yourself a favor and don't take the I-95 route through the whole Baltimore/Washington mess. It really doesn't matter what time of day you go through those areas, it seems like there's ALWAYS traffic there.
The route CharlotteAgent described is definitely less congested and quicker, especially if you're coming from Western New Jersey.
EZ Pass does not work in NC. It works only in states that actually use EZ Pass. Check this link: http://www.ezpass.com/static/info/facilities.shtml (broken link)
I also suggest taking the "back" way (78 to 81 to 77). Very scenic route.
I totally agree thats the way we always drove, beautiful route. I-95 is really not a good route to take. You will enjoy 78 to 81 to 77
If you do take I-95, there is a great book called Drive I-95 by Stan Posner and Sandra Phillips-Posner. It has great maps, tells you where speed traps are, a listing of the radio stations for each major city, and recommendations for restaurants, tourist attractions, lodging, etc.
