Being a SC girl from around Lexington and moving to run the biggest Marina on Lake Norman. Both are man-made lakes, both were created for electricity. Lake Murray is 500 miles of shore line Lake Norman is 540 miles of shoreline.

I can honest say if I had a choice of which lake to live on it would be Lake Murray. The lake is not over crowded, getting to the lake is easy and has several big roads going to the lake. the taxes are lower, you have several places to swim, it is bordered by 4 counties--Lexington (being the biggest), Saluda, Newberry, and Richland (being the smallest and the most expensive when it comes to taxes).I'm not sure if there is a problem with finding the bottom of the lake while riding in the middle of the lake. There are 2 nice size parks on either side of the damn going into Lexington from Irmo or White Rock.

While the main road getting to Lake Norman is 2 lanes and the traffic is unreal. You could be backed up 4 or more miles before getting to the part of the lake you want to go to. Mostly you have to go through so many stop lights once you are off of 77 to get to the lake. It is bordered on 4 counties as well, Mecklenburg (the most expensive and closest to Charlotte and the largest part of the lake), Lincolnton, Iredell, Catawba. You need a depth finder for this lake or you may meet the bottom of the ground in the middle of this land. There are several high and low spots on the lake, when the water is down for the winter you can actually see road is very little of the lake can be seen while traveling from Charlotte to Moorseville. There is no legal swimming in Lake Norman other than the State Park up in Troutman which is the far North of Lake Norman.

We moved here 12 years ago from South Florida specifically for the Lake. (Lake Norman) We love that we had the lake but also had all of the conveniences and activities that would suit our young children. The ISS schools have been fabulous to us, and so far we have gone K-9 (oldest in high school). There is a price range for everyone, and some will offer direct lake access; which was important to us. The lake does get pretty busy on the weekends, but we have been able to work around it! It's really quite large and there is always a quiet cove to offer some refuge for hanging out! We ski, tube and tool around March-November! The traffic is all what your used to, what times you commute and how far. For us we think it's a small price to pay for all of the other luxuries and especially the lower taxes and great schools offered around Mooresville.
