We live in upstate New York with four small kids, we have a nice backyard with a big playground and swing set. At the time of purchase a good three years ago, we also got Rubber Mulch from a company in New Jersey called Rubberecycle they served us very well the price is paid off a long time ago, when i watched my two year old son fall head down we as parents realized how well the money invested.
About rubber mulch getting hot in the summer we do not find this a problem, could be we have some nice trees around the play area to protect from the sun.
Thank you for allowing to share our experiences with rubbermulch

Sunny, you are 100% correct.
I know people who installed rubber mulch & had it removed after it killed a lot of rhodos, azaleas, etc.
Summers in South Jersey are very similar, temperature-wise, to Charlotte but being 60 miles from the ocean, the humidity gets compared to Savannah.
In the sun, the rubber mulch was beastly hot & it started smelling really bad, by late July, in the shade. The stuff doesn't breathe & because of the ghastly humidity, grew so much mold that dirt had to be hauled away & new dirt brought in. Nobody uses the rubber mulch around here. Mulch here is either pine bark or cedar chips.
Anyone have any firsthand experience w/ this? I really don't care for the pine needles, I'm always seeing bugs crawling around in it (and even some snakes). I know it's pricey, but I wanted to see if anyone has it and is happy w/ it. TIA.
My experience with rubber mulch:
After spreading it in my flower beds and around my trees I was told by my HOA that it is a fire hazard and must be removed. So, I had to have all the rubber mulch removed.
So, before you buy, do your research.
You're in a different climate zone in upstate NY. That's the difference. You don't get the sustained extreme heat. Add very thick humidity & it's not a pretty picture.
rubber mulch , no thank you ,
In BJs about a month ago they had it , I was tempted . Then did some research.
Anyway the price of reg mulch was 3.99 a bag.
When I had time to go back , it was 4.49 for the same bag!
