I grew up in NOVA, and my in-laws are all in Charlottesville. I've been away from NOVA now for several years, though I'm up in Charlottesville fairly often.

Here's the thing. I never in a million years would have considered Charlottesville part of Northern Virginia. But now, in the process of moving back to the DC , I'm hearing people here and there refer to Charlottesville as part of NOVA, and my husband even met a guy who commutes from Charlottesville to McLean. Daily.

So, has Northern Virginia expanded so much so that it's reached Charlottesville in most residents' minds? Some people's minds? Or is the notion still just off base?

It's not. They wish they were.

I've always considered it more in the Richmond area.

Well, it's certainly closer to Richmond.

And never mind C'Ville. Tell other residents of in Albemarle that they are NoVa. Or wish they were.

In my mind, the broadest definition of NoVA has always been an imaginary arc from Leesburg through Manassas and down to Triangle. Everything west and south of that arc has a distinctly different feel to me.

Places like Winchester, Harrisonburg, Charlottesville, and Fredericksburg are much more autonomous than any of the cities and towns in NoVA, which are highly dependent on their proximity to DC.

NO! I would never say that! I think the furthest out I would say is Leesburg, maybe Haymarket.

Not at all..... Calling Culpeper part of NoVA is pushing it IMO...

Charlottesville is it's own.

Agreed. What does it mean when Northern Virginians are the ones including non-NoVa areas in NoVa? That they wish their region were the whole of the state?
