I just returned from a trip through the Shenondoah Valley, and I have to say I love it. I'm from New York and I could see myself living there. I would never think of starting a thread by putting down people who already live there as the original poster did..I'm not saying that I wouldn't worry a bit about some stereotypically bad behaviors if I moved there, but you have issues everywhere, including in NYC.

That being said..I have noticed in my dealings with Southerners in both work and play, that a good percentage of them just can't help but bring up "Yankees" even when it has nothing to do with the discussion. I can say in my decades of living up north that Northerners really don't give damn about what Southerners culture is...we don't make some pancakes and say "they don't do it like this down south!"..it never enters peoples minds here. The complex is mostly a one way street, but I don't think it would change how I feel about an area. It's not like you're in danger because of that kind of thinking.

We are an interracial couple and are considering a move to C-ville.Would this

create problems for us?I am caucasian and she is african-american.Also

we both work in the medical field;how is the job market in the hospitals?

We lived in N.Y. city for 14 yrs and currently reside in Delaware. We are

friendly and get along well with people.

tklove, I do not think that being an interracial couple will pose problems in Charlottesville. I don't think that Charlottesville is much different from any other place. You will encounter mainly good people, but there will be some not-so-good people too. I don't think you can escape racism 100% anywhere in our country.

Re jobs in the health professions, check out the website for both the UVA hospital and Martha Jefferson Hospital. I believe that they both post open positions. The local newspaper is the Daily Progress. Check out that paper's website also.

C-ville has two free newspapers. I believe both carry employment ads. One is called "The Hook." The HooK - Charlottesville's weekly newspaper, news magazine

The other paper is C-Ville. C-VILLE Charlottesville's news & arts weekly | Charlottesville VA news music culture dining

There is also a hospital in Fishersville - Augusta Medical Center - which is not too far from Charlottesville.

As far as the original question as to how southern Charlottesville is --- in my opinion, Charlottesville is not very southern.

Good luck!

There are lots of apartments both in Charlottesville and the surrounding counties. Many apartment complexes seem to cater to the college students.

Google Blue Ridge Apartment Council and you will find this outfit's website. This will at least give you a start. On one of the local radio stations, a complex named Barracks Road West has been advertising. You may want to look for them.

I am no expert on Waynesboro so bear that in mind. My daughter went to a private school in Waynesboro for 2 years. Waynesboro just is not my favorite town. I don't think the apartment selection will come close to the selection in Charlottesville. Waynesboro has sections that look gritty. But there has been a lot of commercial development along I-64 and Rt. 340. There are folks on the west side of Albemarle County who travel to Waynesboro for the new stores there rather than shop in Charlottesville.

If you are going to work in Charlottesville, the commute over Afton Mountain can be a death defying experience when the fog is heavy on the mountain. I would not want to make that commute on a daily basis. As far as I know the only two routes over the mountain in that area are rt. 250 and I-64.

Wow! So now I see. Thats what it is Atlanta GA people feel inferior towards people not from the South or people that do not have a southern accent and they put people down, give people a hard time, smirk and think that they are better than people not from the South! It all makes sense thats what I experience everyday from the clothes I wear getting mean stares wow man that is ****ed up!! Of course living here 7 years I tried to figure out and it makes sense now. Of course not everybody is like that BUT MOST EVERyBODY is holy **** maybe like 4% are not like that which is very small. Man Southerners have ****ing issues and pretend everything is ok by whistling wow! It makes SENSE Vanyali! Its like people don't let people breathe here its crazy as big as a city as Atlanta is. Man that makes me feel uncomfortable just to go out I experienced that today in Starbucks I was having a conversation with a woman from the South about metal bands just debating nothing bad and when the Southernwoman made a point the one I was talking to a girl walked up and smirked after the Southern woman I was talking to made a point. And when I made a point people pretending to yawn and looked meanly at me and laughed. And this was my friend from the South that likes metal. Man that is ****ed up now I see what you mean Vayali good point!

I don't know about feeling inferior, but having lived all over the south my whole life I can tell you that the deeper you go, the more pride southerners have in "their way". I have always liked that about certain southern towns, but I can see why it sucks for some people who don't feel like they fit in. It's like you have to conform and really get where they are coming from or you will always feel left out. I think it might be like that all over. It's a shame that Atlanta is like that, it's a huge city. But it's also very steeped in southern tradition and pride. That being said, surely there are folks who listen to heavy metal music there! Don't be discouraged.
