Anyway, sounds like something in the ignition cylinder got in a bind as you suspected. I've done this job on an old Ford, but IIRC needed to drill out old screws w/ an extractor bit and and installed new ones with a Torx security socket.
Oh, I posted this to a GM A-body forum as well, but its not nearly as active. I agree with you though.

Honestly, I might just use this as an excuse to get something different. I've had this one for almost 2 years now, and I like to change things up. Especially if I can find a decent G-body.
