My husband has orders to move to the great lakes naval base. We plan to live on base, Ft. Sheridan looks the best.. but that's only a pic.. We have a 16yr old and a 12 yr old. How are the schools? We have lived in all white community for the pass 5 yrs. I'm not sure how well they are going to do moving. Any info about schools needed..??? Thank you

I'm extremely curious to learn more about your situation. If you are living on base, are you given a choice of school districts? (Our not-so-inspiring Congressman Mark Kirk brokered a deal for the DoD to send more money to school districts. As long as it's the DoD funding the education of kids in military families, it would have been far more practical to send the money in the form of a voucher to the military families directly, so they can choose what school, public or private, to use, as their needs demand.)

Well, you youngest is old enough to go to Northwood Je High, and thats good.
The elementary school for the Ft. Sheridan area is pretty crummy, academics wise, but once you get into the junior high schools and high school, its a great district with a lot of academic activities.

As an aside, I'm not sure what the "all white" community means, and if that is a um...preference....but the area around the base is heavily Hispanic, and Highland Park as itself has a sizable Jewish population. Hope that won't be a problem for you.
