I just found out in Feb I'll be getting stationed at Great Lakes. I looked at the rail line servicing the Great Lakes stop and found that most stops south of Lake Bluff appear to be in decent (low crime) areas. I don't currently own a car and would prefer to not have to buy one for about 6-9 months, so being able to commute by bus and train is a must. I only need a 1 bedroom place.

Does anyone know of apartments in low crime areas within easy walking/bus ride to a metra station? Or of a website that includes a search function with rail stops?

Thanks for the help.

It's pretty hard to live in the Suburbs sans automobile, the area directly south is very expensive (esp. if you are just starting out) and the more affordable housing west and north necessitates a car. You could live in the city in neighborhoods such as Rogers Park, or Ravenswood, or Evanston. Your commute would be over an hour though, each way. Also, keep in mind the Metra is a commuter line with long waits between the trains.

All of these nearby units require cars.

Agree.

I would suggest that the OP look at the METRA schedules where you can wait 2-3 hours between trains on the weekends

My commute now is 50 minutes, but that is by bus and train (I'm in Japan). I'm pretty accustomed to low crime and being around decent people, so I'd like to maintain living in a decent neighborhood and won't mind living in a 500 sq.ft. apartment. But living in an area surrounded by thugs and loud obnoxious people or not being able to comfortably walk the streets at night is out of the question.

Damn, I haven't even left here yet and I'm already missing being able to live in a cheap house in a safe neighborhood.

Along that train line, I think your best bets for safe, quality housing that is walking distance from the train stop, and not too far from the station would be the Evanston - Davis Street station (many apartments in this bustling area) & the Highland Park station (probably the most apartments near the station out of any of the southern Lake County stops on this line).

I'd also look into the Evanston - Main Street station, Rogers Park (Chicago), & Ravenswood (Chicago) stations, if you prefer to be in or closer to the city.

Why not base housing?
