Oh come on. You’re talking about NYC, not Oak Park, whose residents are will be more likely to call the fuzz when you blow that thing. And it’s not like whistles are going to be blowing like car alarms in Humbolt Park during a thunderstorm, good god man. I still say it’s an interesting idea. Not THE solution, of course not, but one little thing that can be done as part of an overall goal. Criminals don’t like attention drawn to themselves.

Turns out the Oak Park Police do have more substantive plans to fight crime and would be happy to tell you about them, it's just that the Sun-Times didn't care to ask.

I'm sure. Some people don't get that fighting crime requires some outside the box thinking and little things add up. You can't just hire a bunch of cops and start smacking people around. You will ultimately fail.

I disagree but it doesn't matter because it won't happen anymore anyway. But when the cops were free to dispense street justice there was less crime. But other things were different as well.

My Dad was telling me a story today about the "old days" just after WW II. He was loaded one night and gave a cabby a 20 thinking it was a 10 and the cabby cheated him, which my Dad realized the next day.

So a couple of weeks later he sees the same cabby parked in front of the Marbro at Madison and Crawford and he dragged the cabby out the window of the cab and gave him a beating right there on Madison Street. A cop came by and stopped my Old Man and asked what was the problem. When he explained that the cabby had cheated him out of a sawbuck the copper made the cabby give the Old Man 10 bucks. Then the copper kicked the cabby in the ass and told him he didn't want to see him around anymore.

Yea, you're possibly right. If the cops could show a little fistic prowess and formally introduce the bad guy's face to the pavement like they used to in the day, it could have an impact (pun intended). Unfortunately, today, people who punch cops and then justifiably get beat up file lawsuits under Section 1983 of the U.S. Code and get some money. People who the cops beat to make an example out of file these lawsuits and get a whole ton of money.

Section 1983 allows victims of civil rights violations to recover attorneys' fees if they prevail. And "prevail" means recover anything. So they could be awarded $5k in damages and get $150k in attorneys' fees. And unfortunately, the jury is often made up of people who don't live in lower income areas and thus have an unrealistic view of what life is like for police "on the streets."

So these days, you're better off with progressive crime fighting measures like marketing your community to attract residents in the higher income brackets and teach people to call police when they see problems.
