I'll just say that in general, crime rates in Oak Park increase as you head east. Since Austin Blvd is the easternmost portion of Oak Park, crime rates will likely be higher there than points west.

How high is too high? That's a fairly individual assessment. People do get mugged on occasion, usually late at night, but I'm not certain if the rate is any higher than in Lincoln Park. I personally would not choose to live on Austin Blvd, but then again I'm not a young starving student without children.

I did tell you my opinion, even if you didn't like it. To me, it doesn't make any sense to live in Oak Park if you're going to school in Lincoln Park.

In addition, as others have mentioned, Austin Blvd connects Oak Park with the city neighborhood Austin, which is not a very nice place to live.

If you can afford a better place, which you can, it wouldn't be something I would consider.

If you are going to DePaul you need to be on the north side of Chicago not Oak Park. In addition there are lots of hip fun areas on the north side for people your age. The only reason to choose Oak Park would be if you are going to the loop campus only. However the north side would offer you access to both campuses.

I think Austin is the dividing line between Oak Park and Austin. So I guess people on one side of the street are Oak park residents and people across the street are in Austin?

For all those presuming he will be going to school in Lincoln Park, it's worth mentioning that DePaul has a grad campus in the Loop as well. That would make a commute from Austin a lot more tolerable. In either case, for $1100/mo I'd choose a location that's more convenient and less iffy.

If you are going to the main DePaul campus-Oak Park would not be a good place to live whether you drive to school or take public transit.
