I was in Chicago for the first time last year and may be heading back. My first afternoon there I had the pleasure of trying Portillo's Italian Beef. It's what I ate for 5 of my meals while I was there. What other places should I try when I'm there?

+1 for Al's ... personally I don't care for Buona's sandwiches.

Well, looks like you got the Italian Beef figured out. I imagine you're looking for other Chicago food fare to enjoy while in town (others can weigh in)

Things I miss:
Mr Beefs (with an s) on Orleans
Chicago Style Dog from Red Hot Ranch (the fries are really good) / A char dog from Phil's last stand
Pequod's Pizza
Las Asadas tacos

I think Portillo serves as good an Italian Beef sandwich as you can find in Chicago. Mr. Beef is about at the same point. Al's original location on Taylor St. is still good, but most of the other, franchised, locations are so/so and I wouldn't recommend visiting one of them. I lived in Oak Park for a while and liked Buona beef, and I frequented Johnnies on North Ave., in Elmwood Park. Johnnies was sold some time ago and it's not the same sandwich, IMO, but it still draws a lot of people out there.
