Segregation is a good thing as long as all areas of the city get equal police protection. I doubt if I'll see that in my lifetime.

Wait, what?

I'm not even gonna touch your statement that segregation is otherwise a good thing.. But how it reasonable to expect different neighborhoods to not receive different police protection? I think cops should be pulled out of low crime neighborhoods and put in high crime neighborhoods. I'm generally not a fan of police but I do accept their purpose if there actually is a crime being committed.

This is the only city I've heard people express their love for segregation.

We have our reasons. Some reasons differ from others. Most of you on this Chicago forum are not from Chicago and do not have the slightest idea about the systematic racism in the city that was introduced decades ago. Trust me, separation has its positives. Chicago is not the only city with a high degree of segregation, and if anyone says otherwise they haven't been to many places.

Living in a predominantly black neighborhood or working in a predominantly black workplace means nothing. Who owns the businesses in the neighborhood? Who owns the building? Who is the alderman, and who does he report to? Who makes the hiring decisions in the workplace? My workplace is racially diverse but the managers aren't. So we could have an office full of black people; it's only symbolic. The people who make the decisions are not black, or any ethnic minority. And the only way a white person could claim discrimination is if the people who made the hiring decisions were black, and even then it would be difficult because white people (well, men) are not in a protected class. Why aren't they in a protected class? BECAUSE THEY HAVE ALL THE PRIVILEGE. LOLOLOLOL
Never is a strong word. Maybe it will take a long time before racism goes away completely but I believe it will at some point. The face of America has changed dramatically over the last century and will continue to change. Minorities are becoming more affluent and do have more opportunities than in the past. Is it enough? No. There are still significant issues that won't be fixed anytime soon. But I've seen first hand people of all races living and working in the same neighborhood and race is seriously a non factor. This was California which isn't nearly as plagued by segregation as Chicago but why couldn't it happen in Chicago? It needs a lot of work but I believe it could happen. Maybe I'm too much of an idealist.

Yup, absofreakinglutely, because we all know how well that "separate but equal" thing worked out before

Why do I even open these threads any more and make the attempt?? This place is getting as bad as the P&OC forum sometimes...

I agree with you 100%. Segregation is why Chicago has not yet become New York (erasing the uniqueness of the city), but we're well on our way with Emanuel at the helm. Segregation, on its own, just means "separation", and there's nothing wrong with that. Nobody ever criticizes the Greek for their insular culture.

Quality of life for black people has taken a huge nose dive since Obama got in office. It's not his fault, but it's a direct consequence of him being president. The difference between now and then is that there aren't crosses being burned in our yards, we're not being hosed down or denied access to establishments, but when the Obama presidency is over, history will expose these times for what they are.
