Your contempt is helping make South Side's point.

And it's "couldn't care less".

Just to be clear, I have no contempt whatsoever for South Siders, it's a geographic determination based on Madison Avenue, not a cultural designation AFAIC.

I just have never had a need/reason to venture terribly deep into the South Side. The North Side neighborhoods I've lived in are densely populated and dense in terms of commercial activity, I don't even have time to keep up with all the stuff happening within a mile of my house.

Exactly. I have no reason to think of the southside or the people that live there. Just like I dont think about or care about people on the far north side. It's a big city. All cities are like that. I highly doubt people in Brooklyn care about the people or the Bronx.

The largest and more powerful cities tend to be the most hated.

Nearly every day, but I read the news and know quite a few expats here.

Default Northside Southside Thing.

I've lived on the north side and south side and can appreciate both.

There is almost no social options for African Americans on the north side like there is in the corridor of South Loop and Hyde Park. Its not the side of town where Black professionals have options.

There is more contempt from north siders in trendy Lakeview and Lincoln park for south siders than there is the other way around. These are the types who have never been to the south side nor have anything to do with Black people because of what they've been taught.

Even when I interact with the uptown people, there seems to be a anti south side feeling. I've never heard or seen much north side tension except for those who have had racial issues visiting certain north side neighborhoods.

I don't have boundaries due to my profession. I visit and can enjoy all neighbhoods (that's something most Chicagoans can't say). Natives have been taught that Chicago is smaller than it is and that drives me up the wall. Sometimes I have to ask myself am I in the third largest city or backwoods Mississippi 1960 not the 2013 Mississippi. Just keeping it real.

Provincial thinking is irritating to most open minded people.

When you say black professionals don't have options, what do you mean by that?

I think the whole "side" thing is such a wide generalization that it's useless now. Someone living in Hype Park can live a very similar life to someone living in Evanston. Someone living in Bridgeport can live a similar life to someone living in Avondale. Someone living in Beverly can live a life very similar to someone living in Melrose Park.

That said, there are obvious concentrations of poverty in sections of the South and West sides. These areas should not define entire "sides" of the city (in the same way that Uptown doesn't define the Far Northside any more than Edison Park should).
