I'd say far SW or far NW sides.

I can suspend disbelief about the affordability of a house, especially when I compare it to any TV apartments in shows set in NYC.

Al Bundy worked at the HIP!?? I can see that. It's a one-floor mall (except for the anchors). And they never mentioned a second floor during the show

I guess that this would correspond to "Cop Land", as one poster put it, although much larger than a bungalow...

This show was not known for its subtlety, although it did have some occasional "tongue-in-cheek" humor...

Exactly.

The other place I had in mind was somewhere like Dolton, Cal. City or Beverly... but the HIP and the shoe store is what made me think of Norridge.

I think we can all agree and settle on Norridge and/or nearby neighborhoods. Actually, that corner of Chicago closest to O'Hare was the last to get built up (around Norridge) as it was the last to get annexed. Norridge itself is largely 50s ranches, and tacky, ostentatious teardowns, yet there are a few streets around. However there are a few streets with some 1960s, attached garage houses that can come closest to the house in Deerfield where the exterior shots.

As far as how they were able to afford it, lets say they stumbled upon a fortune/inheritance/won in a game show when they bought the house and/or Al made monster commission at the shoe store, but never talked about it, as it wouldn't fit his cynical character.

Between Cumberland, Canfield, the Kennedy, and Bryn Mawr.

Google streetview it. Not sure if thats officially Chicago adress, but if so, they might be the only streets with 1960s SFHs in the city limit.

In the opening shots didn't they show the car driving in on the Dan Ryan or something? That's why I always just figured south burbs.
