Its pretty much standard. Sitcom households always have a bigger/nicer place than they can afford with their job in the real world.

I assume you might have had "Friends" in mind. Like how did they afford that apartment in Manhattan when they were not working some of the time, and working as a barista, etc. the other times.

You could also look at the size of Homer Simpson's house, for a similar comparison (pretty similar character)..

To see the family living in that house, wherever it's supposed to be located, requires some suspension of disbelief.

This was what I thought throughout the show. They appeared to have a decent, suburban looking 3 or 4 bedroom bi-level house, in what looked like a suburb of Chicago.
I just assumed that there are some areas with a Chicago address that are less urban.

However, it was hard to get over the idea that they were living on a shoe salesman's salary.
I guess I preferred the reality of "Roseanne" to the many huge leaps of faith required by "MWC".
Just a matter of taste, I guess.

I hated both shows TBH. And I was supposed to be one of the horny teen boys who tuned in to drool over Christina Applegate, whose appeal I never understood until she actually started to look like a grown-up.

As for Roseanne, I'd rather listen to Slim Whitman all day than to hear her voice for half an hour.

Probably in a lower income area ( and yet not ghetto area )

So, maybe Hermosa, Cragin or Portage Park? Then again, Marcy Darcy lived next door and to me, she would live probably in Lincoln Park

The area where Park Ridge and Des Plaines meet came to mind.

The house in the pilot intro looked like something you would see in Bolingbrook or Westmont.

Best show ever!!

To answer the questions about income: Al is most likely the manager of the shoestore, as he's worked there for a long time and there doesn't seem to be anyone else who would be higher than him, except Gary, the owner. So, probably 40-50k. And even though the house looked decent, that doesn't mean they lived "well" on his salary. Considering a lot of the jokes are regarding how broke he they are. And he had the Dodge since high school.

Although he is seen in a Mustang in one or more episodes..

Homer works at the nuclear power plant. Decent money! He quit the bowling alley because he had kids to pay for. It was the only way he could do it.

Good explanation. It requires a little imagination, but one could stretch to make the show work in a real life context.

Any honestly, haven't we all known people who live in homes, they can't really afford anyways? I certainly grew up with friends who had larger homes than the one that I grew up in, but the families could never afford to go on vacation, etc. In a way, it could be seen as a little social commentary about American suburban life giving the impression or facade of wealth.
