A friend of mine got jumped by some Mexicans recently in Albany Park. He was walking around with headphones on and someone busted a bottle over the back of his head. You might want to watch your back in this neighborhood.

Chicago South Sider, are you sure they weren't Guatemalan or El Salvadoran? (tongue in cheek). All seriously, I am sorry to hear that happened to a friend of yours. NO ONE certainly deserves that. I wonder if you've seen certain threads on here about safety, but I have always been an advocate to NOT wear headphones. They remove the ability to hear things a person would WANT to hear ("Hey, duck!/ ... you wanna jump him?/ watch out for that unleashed dog!/ etc.")... To the OP, research the area in depth, and also check it out and follow your gut! Albany Park DOES have some nice sections with a lot of diversity. Good luck! Be safe! Be happy!- Master Jay in Milwaukee

You would think most people have enough common sense not to walk the streets with headphones on. I was surprised that he was so careless.

South Sider, like I said, it's not just self defense against a person. One needs their hearing as much as possible if a car was coming at you and the driver wasn't paying attention coming quickly out of an alley, or if a dog got loose, etc. I hate to say: live and learn, but one should be fortunate to LIVE through a situation to LEARN something! Yeah, yeah.. I get it. All that is obvious to people with basic common sense.

Chicago South Sider, perhaps it's not always about people not demonstrating common sense. Sometimes people get so comfortable in a routine that they may not be on their BEST defensive! I wish everyone out there well! Master Jay in Milwaukee
