$1950 1/BRs, high rises, fancy cocktails...

When did hipster become a synonym for yuppie?

Is it because hating hipsters is cool, but hating yuppies is... for... hipsters?

I agree with everything Attrill posted, but I'm not sure you actually read what he wrote. It's not NIMBYism, it's Machine politics at work here.

on the parking issue, this is quite hilarious & topical:

Preliminary comprehensive city plan of Chicago a generalized presentation of the physical elements of the city plan designed for a population of 3,800,000 by 1965.

You have seized upon the horns of the dilemma!

"Horns of Dilemma" would make a great name for a rock band.

In fact I'm pretty sure that's the name of the backing band for Violent Femmes.

I talked to a couple people over the weekend about the anti-hipster aspect of the opposition to the tower. It looks like some people who used to work for Toni Berrios are involved in opposing the development, and they're trying to use opposition to the development for their own purposes (defeating Moreno and Guzzardi). There's a lot more going on politically than just judging the project on it's own.

That said, I think the towers should be in the 5-8 story range, and I could care less if they have any parking at all. Ironically many of the people who are worried about traffic want the land to be used for a grocery store, which would bring a hell of a lot more traffic than any residential building ever could. I'm also very sympathetic to concerns about affordable housing, but while everyone is spending their time protesting this development dozens of $500-800K homes are being built right in the area, driving up rents and property values. There needs to be a coherent plan to support affordable housing, opposing individual projects does absolutely nothing to help with that.
Reading that flyer again I noticed the "Save Our Boulevards" contact, which is a bit odd given that the group's origins stem from property owners on the boulevards who hated Rey Colon's move to legitimize parking on them. They seem like an unlikely bunch to get in bed with Joe Berrios, but strange events/strange bedfellows and all that.

So I think the post above is even more spot on in regard to the need for a coherent plan, because that's what is sorely lacking here.

What would you recommend they do for public transportation in the area? Expand it? Build a new line? Just curious on what the available options are moving forward.

If I liked "Horns of Dilemma" before it was cool, can I call myself a hipster?
