Yes, this is usually the yearly cyclical pattern. Each year when it gets cold, crime decreases. It’s the summer months when crime peaks.

Unfortunately, with about 1 month to go, it’s a forgone conclusion that Chicago will once again lead the nation in murders. Although Philly and Houston were challenging for a while. Violent crime is down this year compared to last couple, so some positive news.

This shootout happened back in May but I found it remarkable because it happened in Cabrini Green: link. If you put the street view camera where one of the shooters was standing, it shows he was aiming in the direction the Cabrini Green row homes: link. Remarkable, because it shows regardless of how much new construction there is in Cabrini Green, it seems the true Cabrini Green spirit will never fade.

From Old Town thread...

I don't know about the particular budget of CPD. However, it is not true that the Defund the Police movement hasn't had a documentable impact on police budgets. Read this article from Politifact: Politifact: Some police budgets are increasing, but evidence of national trend falls short.

In addition, if you have interacted with CPD lately, you will know that morale has only gotten worse over the last several years. The haphazard and inconsistent "leadership" from the Lightfoot administration, the increasing influence of northside "progressive" activist movements, the ineptitude of Dart's Sheriff's Office, and the unbelievable malpractice of Kim Foxx's office have combined to create a low-level sense of lawlessness across Cook County, but especially within the City.

In the past two weeks, I have had two stupifying encounters with the City of Chicago and CPD. A abandoned and running vehicle was left in the parking lot of a building of mine and I was told by CPD that they could not run the plates to see if it was stolen. They instructed me to contact 3-1-1. 3-1-1 said it was outside of their purview and routed me to, get this, 9-1-1. 9-1-1 told me that there was nothing that they could do and that I could not have the vehicle towed until a patrol car stopped by the building. No one ever showed, so I took the keys out and had it towed. I haven't heard anything since.

Another incident involved the theft of a student's phone at this same building in Humboldt Park. The student from Puerto Rico had accidentally left the phone in a bathroom and it was stolen by a patient who dumped the phone in Humboldt Park. Despite sharing all of the available information including all of the data from Find My iPhone, the student was told that the allegations were hearsay and that there was nothing CPD could do to help her retrieve the phone. Eventually, members of the staff assisted her in retrieving the phone from Humboldt Park where it had been left unaccompanied by the thief.

CPD is not equipped by the government or supported by the community in a way that makes them valuable assets to public safety. I realize CPD has had a sordid history at times, but look at the current alternative. We haven't seen anything yet.

^^ It's worth mentioning when the city and CPD finally settled on a collective bargaining agreement after the CPD worked for 4 years without one, the pay increase was retroactive to when the previous agreement expired. This major one-time budget line item is what Mayor Chia-pet used to "brag" about the increased police budget. In terms of actual manpower, the CPD is about 2,000 short of the total allotment in the city budget. And if the political milieu of Chicago and Cook county are any indication, that's no accident -- whether by direct fiscal or by public policy means, the net outcome is the same.

Not if you keep housing the same dysfunctional people in what remains of it.

^^ Another issue -- not spoken about often enough IMO -- is the mass resignations/departures from the Cook County State's Attorney's Office which has left the office some 250 prosecutors short.

Here's a wonderful taste of our local justice system in action: A man gets a double-murder charge pled down to home invasion, for which he served a grand total of 8 years. 3 months after being paroled, he shoots up a family out celebrating a woman's 25th birthday -- whom he shot execution-style while she was tending to her mortally wounded father. Another of the deceased victims was her brother.

Video camera recorded gunman killing 3, wounding 1 outside Chicago bar as parolee is charged

One of many examples over the years where violent criminals were let back on the street only to murder someone. It’s a prime example of why this city will never erase this violent crime reputation that plagues it. Until we have elected leaders that will actually be tough on crime, the city will continue its downward spiral that has tarnished its reputation.

There has been an uptick in crime activity up here in Lincoln Square/Ravenswood. Not murders, but robberies of pedestrians and break ins.

For the first time since moving here 3.5 years ago, I feel like it's only a matter of time before me or one of my family members is caught not looking and victimized in some way.

Just 2 blocks away last week at 6:45pm, somebody pulled up next to a person walking, got out, pointed a gun at them and demanded their wallet and phone. This happened right on the 3 block walk between my son's apartment and my place. Easily could have been him. Also, that 7-11 on Eastwood/Western is often a target - I've vowed not to go there anymore even during the day.

Now, that doesn't mean I'm afraid of being out in my neighborhood, but it's not the "oh, this part of the city is perfectly safe" type of feel right now where I walk carefree - I'm more aware. I know these things ebb and flow over time....but it's definitely on "flow" right now.

Another murder in Uptown. Still find it interesting that this one like the others from earlier in the year is further west than where one might historically expect.
