You lost bail to levied fines.
I've never heard of any bail money ever being returned, barring not guilty.

If the defendant pays the bail without a bail bondsman involved, then the bail is returned once the case is complete, regardless of the outcome. If the defendant uses a bail bondsman, then the cost is typically 10% of the bail amount, and it is not refundable, even if the defendant is not guilty.

Who are the 2 county sheriffs, that stupidly thought the Safe T Act was a good idea? I still think it's a bad idea, but that's just me. I do wonder if Tom Dart, is one of those 2 sheriffs? If so, I disagree with him.

I'll be the 1st to say the bail system was never intended to deter crime but it's unintended consequence leads to lower crime because the criminal justice system is too slow and forgiving for repeat offenders.

In other countries where there's less crime, if you're arrested for certain grade crime you immediately get locked up and held until court.

In America because crime is too rampant in some cities, the bail system ensures the jail are cleared and the accused post bail and go home, so there's enough space for more criminals.

Terrible system, there should be higher penalties and support system to ensure no repeat offenders and no need to lock people up.

It's unfortunate when you travel to some countries, crime almost doesn't exist and they don't have that much skyscrapers. Yet, we have so many skyscrappers in various cities and so much crime. That's capitalism at it's finest I suppose.

In California, bail reform was shut down by the bailbondsman lobby. Here in IL, think of the lawyers! Many of them get paid for minor offenses by the arrestee signing over his or her bond slip. Now all that is gone.

Actually, in CA a law was passed to phase out cash bail. But then after the law passed voters demanded a referendum which repealed the law, and retained cash bail with 56% of the vote. But in general bail is very low here, compared with most of the rest of the country.
