Remember Nuevo Leon being good when it was on 18th but haven't been since they closed that one after the fire there years ago.

Casa de Samuel by Cermak and California was good also.

Can anyone recommend a place? Preferably along I-55.
If you are traveling all the way to Chicago, you should probably just make the trip to River North to enjoy one of Rick Bayless' restaurants. For many people, that is a once in a lifetime experience.

Nuevo Leon on 18th was the best. Back in the late 70s-6 people would eat for less then $30 and that inclued appetizers and drinks. I loved that place.

EllieKay56, when you come down, it would be my honor to buy you something off the Mexican restaurant menu!

The OP mentions that s/he is from Arizona. As I am as well (thus the handle) I have to say I don't really find much Sonoran Mexican food in Chicago. While I like many restaurants in Pilsen, they all seem to be central Mexican (Jalisco, Michoacán, Queretaro) style rather than northern. Most of us like what we grew up with and I've never been wowed by Mexican food here (though it beats the heck out of what passes for Mexican food in Boston!)

Though I have not tried it myself, I have heard that Old Pueblo in Lakeview does Sonoran/Tucson style food. The dried beef (carne seca) cheese crisp in particular is something I have not really seen anywhere outside of Tucson (El Charro)
Well crap, now that I've been thinking about it, now I've gotta go there and try it!

And to add to that, concerning northern Mexican recipes, Nuevo Leon (both a northern Mexican State and its namesake restaurant on 26th Street in Little Village) is an option.

Sounds like a plan. We use to love going to the Mexican restaurants in Milwaukee too!
