I live in Alaska, and am flying to Chicago on Saturday, then driving to Peoria. I am craving real Mexican food, as we don't have that up here. I am originally from Arizona, so you can imagine what I am missing.

Can anyone recommend a place? Preferably along I-55.

Tequila CJ Cantina Grill, it's near the I55 not to far from Midway airport. There are also lots of taquerias in Little Village neighborhood which isn't too far from I55.

AGREED!

If you can't find a great Mexican restaurant along W. 26th Street in La Villita (Little Village), then you should just go to Taco Bell!

If you're a fan of goat, Birrieria Zaragoza is close to Midway and the I-55 and has been raved about for years. The goat w/consomme was delicious.
If you want more variety (than goat) though, swing to 26th street (Little Village) there are a ton to choose from. I think I had La Villita Restaurant last time and it was pretty good. Plus there were some old dudes singing Mexican folk music through a karaoke machine. Good times!

quigboto, I wonder if you went to Nuevo Leon, by 26th and Lawndale?

That sure was the experience I had there a couple of months ago. And GREAT FOOD, too.

But as we said, it is very easy to find good authentic, Mexican food on 26th Street. AND bakery, too!!!!

You know what? That name rings a bell. I may have been getting the two mixed up. And Nuevo Leon is much better reviewed, so you are probably right. Thank you for the corrrection.
I am, however, certain I got Birrieria Zaragoza right.

As others have mentioned- Pilsen and Little Village (La Villita) are the largest Mexican neighborhoods in the city. There are all types of authentic Mexican food places, including more hole-in-the-walls where you will likely find the most authentic Mexican food.

Just walking around would be your best bet, although, you'd be advised to stick to main streets, as certain parts (especially in Little Village) can be a little dicey. Maybe focus your google searches on these areas, and you'll likely get good recommendations.

When we lived in Chicago our go to places were always along 18th Street followed by Logan Square.
