Did anybody think that maybe the bean carved the letters into itself like the McCain lady carved the backward B into her face?

Ya, that sounded much funnier before I typed it out...

Sadly, bronze theft isn't a Southern phenomenon, by any stretch. With copper prices riding high (at least they were. Not sure what copper prices are like now) due, especially, to foreign demand, idiots were ripping off priceless art all over and selling it for scrap.

Someone stole a set of massive sculptures from John Waddell's AZ ranch in 2007.
Famous Waddell Sculptures Stolen for Scrap Metal : NPR

There were lots of these thefts in New Zealand in 2006.
[MSN] New Zealand. The theft of a bronze sculpture from a Havelock North gallery last Wednesday was a copycat of similar thefts from Auckland galleries.

A 5.2 million dollar Moore sculpture was lifted in London in 2005.

Etc.

More on topic, vandalism at the Bean was inevitable. I hope the taggers get a kick in the balls. It should be reparable, though. (The sculpture. Not the balls)

Unfortunately this sort of thing is common. You see grafitti on monuments even when travelling abroad in Europe, etc.
I'm stunned too -- that they didn't foresee this eventually happening! People tag those ugly a-- electrical boxes and traffic light poles for God's sake. A bright shiny artsy bean must be completely irresistable to a tagger.

I say electrify the thing and be done with it.

Commodity prices in general have plummeted as a result of decreased demand. I guess the one good thing about the global Depression is that I don't have to worry as much about my copper gutters being stolen. I used to read that all the time in the local paper. Not a single reported theft of gutters in the past month (in the paper at least).

Toys.

But they'll get it off.
Not like they don't erase thousands of other nice pieces around the city leaving the walls back to a boring ,dull, monotonic, bland, regular, appearance.

I had assumed as much.

Also, I think we should probably stop referring to the vandals as "taggers". "Tagger" implies... I dunno... either gang connections or a sort of vaguely artistic sensibility. This, to me, seems like some 12 year old jag who is probably shocked and a little freaked out that this is getting such news coverage.

No.

But taggers don't use their names. This is probably just some tourist who decided to scratch his name in. Just like a lot of people do.

There's cameras there?????
Oh man... I've done some things :S

Very nice! You must have a very cool vintage house. Do you have a clay tile or slate roof too? I think the next City-Data party should be at Sukwoo's house.
