I have a car, so I don't know -- but I'd imagine that (in Econ speak) "at the margin" one wouldn't want to spend the $50 for the zipcar for the errand.
It's $6.75/hour.

Hmmm... Well this thread seems like fun.

A few things:
1) Can we get over the idea of anyone having to "sell" their city to anyone? Chicago's a great place to be young and work, and I don't think it needs "selling" to anyone. Nor does any city worth a damn.

2) I had a car in Chicago. I got t-i-r-e-d of it. I don't live near the loop. I live in Lincoln Square. I have been happily car-free for some time now. ESPECIALLY in the winter. If I lived in, say, Mayfair, I'd own a car. If I had a kid, I'd own a car. But I don't. Nor do lots of people who don't own a car. Don't think we're wierd, Mr Drivesalot. Sit behind the wheel of your car in traffic and thank us for not adding another car to the congested streets. It's one less car to compete with for overpriced parking meters.

3) Now, having said ALL of that, if you're a CPS teacher... you may need a car. The CPS schools in good areas are hard to get jobs in, and many of the schools where you'll end up starting are probably in areas that you'd rather drive to than take public trans. One of the few times I was happy I had a car was when I was teaching an after-school course at a CPS school in a rough area. The lot, however, was pretty secure.

Yeah, I was going to say that.

But I didn't. I put my trust in you to provide the necessary information. Like Ben Gordon, besides Game 7 of the Celtics series, you came through.

Its a damn shame the ass slap is so widely accepted on the playing field, but so feared in the office. People like feeling appreciated. When I get to the top, I'm going to develop an office culture as homoerotic as professional sports. Hit your number, I'm going to walk up to you and give you a hug. Get that report in time? Attaboy, here's a slap on the ass to let you know its a job well done.

Productivity will skyrocket. Until we hire a gay and he ruins all our fun.

Hooray for homoerotic city-data threads (that have absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand.)

My fault. Slow afternoon.
