How on earth will business owners prove they are gay so as to qualify?

What about those who aren't really gay?

I guess a marriage license from our neighboring state to the west will suffice?

Good question. There's only one way I can think of...

This program sounds like a way to expand corruption more than anything else. Are there really that many gay contractors clamouring for city work? Maybe straights should have set asides for on-stage roles at Broadway in Chicago. Or for interior design jobs.

Actually I think many strippers/dancers in Cocktail and Spin are straight.

I'm gay and I am utterly against this. This whole idea of city contract set-asides has turned into a gigantic con-game. Most of the company getting contracts under these programs only have token minority/female ownership. Many of them are actually controlled by organized crime.

We should be running away from this dopey idea, not embracing it. There is enough resentment against gay people as it is without bringing more on us by buying into the affirmative action scam. Tom Tunney should be ashamed of himself. We don't need this. Chicago doesn't need this. Contracts should be granted on basis of bids and competency to do the job, nothing else.

Look, I don't want to **** off the gay mafia (and believe me, there is a gay mafia) but this is such BS.

I'd like to see contracts go to the most skilled and I'm willing to pay more for it, too. I'd like jobs to be done well.

<< Maybe middle-class kids at Chicago Catholic high schools should get some affirm action into UofC and Northwestern, nobody is helping/funding them. >>
UofC does a pretty good job of providing financial aid to middle-class kids. To your specific point, there are scholarship programs specifically for the children of Chicago Police and Firefighters. have been for years. Do some research on the some the other programs...

As per comment about 'marxist' U of C faculty and associated , umm , let's see... Milton Friedman, George Stigler, Gary Becker, Richard Posner, Charles Lipson, Eugene Fama, Milt Rosenberg, Robert
Bork, Anton Scalia, Edward Levi,Morton Kaplan, .... OMG, a veritable politburo there.. U of C, over the years and even today, has been known ( and reviled by those inclined to do so at the drop of a hat) as an institution where a 'conservative' intellectual approach is not immediately kicked to the curb. Sure, there are those faculty that one might categorize as 'left wing' or,<gasp> even MARXIST..so what ??

Waukegan, you just have to understand that some people will not open up their minds or see what is right in front of them for multiple reasons whether that be self preservation or whether that may be that they are a product of indoctrination. I don't agree with everything that you have said but some of what you have said is anchored in truth. Don't worry about going tit for tat with posters that you do not like. Thousands of people read these boards. You don't have to prove yourself to anyone. Say your piece and then move on because a lot of people just like to gang up on some one and not counter arguments with an informed angle. They would rather hurl insults. Which kind of lends credence to what you are saying.

As long as you don't attack anyone and back up what you are saying, like you have been, then you should be alright. Just don't get your feathers ruffled and just understand that the majority of people will not see anything that you say as truthful or enlightening. There is strength in numbers even if they are small. Only 15% of colonists were against the King of England and without them there would be no United States of America. A lot of times, the majority is wrong. Just because it is popular does not make it right.
