I like Madison with its State Street and the Union square... I am wondering if there are any places within 3 hours of driving from Chicago that I should visit besides Madison. I just want a place that is interesting enough, not too crowded (like Chicago), not too quite like most Parks. Pretty much something that can ease my mind away. Thanks guys. Indianapolis will be my last choice if I can't find anything more interesting, I have not been to Urbana/Champaign, Milwaukee, and such....
South Haven.

Saugatuck, if you prefer (I don't, but its a personal choice).

Holland.

New Buffalo if you want something even closer.

Although I like Madison, I would not go there to escape. I was there recently and was surprised. It is a big town. I'd go to south western Michigan like Sagatuck, or South Haven. There may be other places in S. WI too that might be good. Galena is good too.

If you like wine, head to Tabor Hill in southwestern Michigan for a relaxing day. Great tasting, nice tour, good restaurant.

onixxino: Galena is a great suggestion for your trip. Even the trip over there can be relaxing, especially if you take the less-traveled highways. Beautiful scenery through quaint, smaller towns.
Galena has much to offer and options for stays range from log cabins to rent, to B&B's, to rental homes in the town itself and the Galena Territories. There's the historic downtown to visit, wineries, golf, spas, kayaking on the river (rentals available), hot-air ballooning & horseback riding available in the Territories, and more. Nearby Dubuque offers casinos and dog-racing track for additional options. And yes, U.S Grant's home is located within Galena for history buffs too.
My wife and I escape to Galena as often as possible. It's close to Chicago ... but seems like a world away. Hope you enjoy yourself no matter your choice of destinations ... but consider Galena a good option for a future stay.

Lake Geneva, WI
Only 1:45 away and absolutely beautiful scenery.
They've got this weird convenant where there's a public path through everyone's back yard around the entire lake. Very odd considering some of those houses are worth $10 million or more and any joe blow off the street can just stroll across the back yard along the lake. It's amazing that for as much money some of those people have that they haven't been able to get that law changed.

Anyway, there are some fun bars, restaurants, etc, great golf, nice biking/walking.
