Smart Bar has always been in the basement of (Cabaret) Metro on Clark Street.
I do know next door to the train tracks was the Avalon in my young days.

I was always under the impression Tut's moved to Belmont from Clark.

After it closed on Belmont it was replaced by the Avalon.

Tut's was before my time.

The guy I know that told me about Tut's on Clark is like 60 years old or so.

Here is some confirmation of what he told me:

"yea Mark, that sounds about right with Iggy downstairs at Waves; don't recall exactly when Tut's came and went on Clark st for sure-too many pickled synapes tangled in cobwebs in my brainspace.."

"Smart Bar began in 1982..."

"A local promoter directed Shanahan to 3730 North Clark Street, the building that would become Smart Bar. Originally built in 1927 as a Swedish Community Center, the building was a jazz/folk club called Stages Music Hall when Shanahan came upon it. Shanahan was enamored with the space, and in July of 1982 opened Smart Bar on the top floor of the building. Eventually, Shanahan moved Smart Bar into the lower level of the building and took over the main floor, opening the live music venue Metro there."

Our Lady is now a charter school I think.
St. Leo is still there I think. It's a boys school.

Oh, south side, how I love thee!

It's ironic how those scary, hardazz 60's gangbangers seem so civilized now when compared to their present day counter-parts. I recently made a couple of attempts to view the OLA site while passing thru the area and didn't get much satisfaction. The church/school area is infested with bangers. I didn't get a chance to view the place, because I couldn't stop my car and I was always looking behind me.

I travel thru the west side often and I don't scare easily, but the sheer number of thugs present in that area was more than I am comfortable with.

The Tuts I went to was on Belmont and Sheffield. Saw the Cramps there and many other bands. I think it may have been the old Kinetic Playground.

How about Gaspars? Saw Richard Hell and the Voidoids there. Great concert place.

I remember the fire like it was yesterday, most people who were kids then do.

Have you read the book about it, To Sleep with the Angels? Good book.

That place was at Ashland and Lawrence. I saw Led Zeppelin open for Vanilla Fudge there, the Fudge smoked 'em.

I saw Ted Nugent somewhere (no idea where) before he was ...er...Ted Nugent...

and, my best friend remembers going to sock hops with the band Chicago Transit Authority...

oh, and Styx was discovered at the 1973 Taft High school prom in Arlington Heights. (I was the class of 74, didn't hear/see them at that prom..) Tried to get them for our '74 prom and they quoted us the premium rate...obviously, we were ticked, it was OUR SCHOOL that got them discovered!!!
