It’s a shame that area happens to be the heart of the neighborhood. I get the feeling it will take things getting a lot worse before they get better, which may very well never happen. And until that happens I’ll continue living in my little corner willfully oblivious to the craziness between Montrose and Lawrence.

It will be interesting to see how the neighborhood handles July 4th, i get the feeling fireworks won't be the only thing going bang.

I lived at Sheridan and Foster for about 6 months before moving to San Francisco about 6 years ago, I would have preferred somewhere else in the North Side but I got a good deal on a studio and took over a guy's lease since I only wanted to stay in Chicago for 6 months and most other landlords would have wanted me to sign a full year's lease.

Anyway Uptown wasn't all that bad but it definitely feels a lot sketchier than most other parts of the North Side. I never had anything bad happen to me. The Chinese stores and restaurants around the corner at Argyle where handy. There were some great restaurants near my place like a really great and cheap Mexican place that served much more home style food than any taqueria, can't remember the name but I hope it's still open, also a new diner opened up owned by the lady who owned the gay bar in the area, Chicks or something like that.

Basically the whole area just kind of looks decrepit and slummy, especially around Clark and Lawrence as I recall, and there are always a lot of homeless people and sketchy kids all over the place. It is probably the most racially diverse area of Chicago.

Sort of surprised that it still has a reputation as being sketchy, I would have hoped that it would have improved by now since it seemed like when I left in late 2003 things were turning up a bit with new restaurants and developments.

No, this was particularly crazy. Literally thousands of people crowded on the sidewalks, in parking lots, in the McDonalds, etc. I've never seen anything like it in Uptown, and I've lived in the neighborhood for more than five years now.

I won't be bringing my kids. It was already bad enough over there on past July 4th holidays.

It was a large pride event at Montrose harbor that spilled over into the area around Wilson. One person shot at Wilson and Sheridan, another at Wilson and Broadway. How cliche is that.

Apparently someone started screaming anti-gay slurs, and walking down the street randomly shooting into the crowd as he moved towards the train station. The police showed up instantly and had the entire area blocked off and cleared.

I live on Buena and had no idea anything was going on. It must have been north of Montrose for the most part.

I did walk home from Lakeview up Broadway to Buena around 7pm, and noticed a lot of people wearing rainbow everything. Not that I cared or it meant anything, but I was curious at what was going on since I was moving away from the mess down by the parade. I've noticed a big increase in the number of south siders and west siders who show up on parade day compared to past years. Apparently there were some really severe fights and muggings going on along Belmont and then Clark Street down towards Wellington all night last night. I know of three different friends who were jumped/beaten/mugged in different places along that corridor at various times. The attackers were all different people, but when the cops showed up (people on the street held the attackers in each situation) the attackers were all from the south side who had come up earlier in the night.
