Because it provides you with yet another opportunity to "get it right" the next time around. It directly points to the fact of your humanity.
If you are aware of something, (acknowledging that you have sinful ways) then and only then do you possess the power to correct/change it...
Aah, but a mistake is not a sin.
People who sin actually know that they are committing sins; this is why they hide themselves.
People don't hide themselves from plain view because they believe that they've made a 'simple' mistake.

Unless I am sinning in my sleep, or otherwise unconscious, and assuming that I have been taught and am well versed on what sin is, would I not therefore know that I have somehow sinned?
I remember as a child going to confession. (I know, I know...June went to confession at one time???) If I am unaware of my sins, then how could I possibly have "confessed" them, and thereby asked for forgiveness? What is "penance?" (Okay folks, it's been more than a few years here...)
Doesn't the Bible teach what "right and wrong" consist of? Does one not have a conscience? Or, better yet:
Without conscious knowledge of my sinful actions, have I in fact "sinned?" What is the context within which I am either "thankful" or apathetic for the human nature and/or direct result and actions of my sins?

I dunno I've never confessed to a priest nor do I believe in a 'spiritual' confession.
I only ask forgiveness from the people I have wronged.

I do not regard learning and making mistakes as sinning.
The first time is probably a mistake, so you better learn.
The second time could be the teacher's fault for not explaining it right.
For me to forgive the third time of making the same mistakes depends on what the mistake actually was and how severe it is.
After the third time I consider it a sin.
