How did the author of the gospel of John know about this conversation? It supposedly occurred between Jesus and Nicodemus, a Pharisee who came to Jesus at night to ask him questions.

First, I hold to the traditional authorship of the gospel accounts. I think the early church was in a position to know who the gospel writers were.
All the writers of Scripture, both Old Testament and New Testament, were superintended by the Holy Spirit so that what they wrote was accurate. This doesn't mean that the gospel writers didn't make use of source material. Luke plainly states that he made use of information that had been handed down by eyewitnesses from the beginning.
With regard to how John knew about the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, Jesus, either before or after His resurrection might have provided the details to John, or he might have obtained the information from Nicodemus himself.
Yep You can "maybe this" or "perhaps that" out of any problem, or fall back on divine revelation if necessary. But those who look and see glaring contradictions will ask themselves whether someone's testimony was not to be trusted - miraculous or not.

Nicodemus brought Jesus down from the cross and provided 75 pounds of myrrh and aloes
for His burial. He was a close friend of Joseph of Arimathea who provided the tomb and was a
relative of Jesus's mother (probably an uncle). The apostle John was also at the foot of the cross.
There are reasons to believe (1), (2) Nicodemus is mentioned in the Talmud.
The scripture is something like John 6:39-40 , which Jesus said ``This is the will of Him who sent Me , that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing , but raise it up on the last day ....For this is the will of My Father , that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have everlasting life , and I Myself will raise him up on the last day ``............I do not know who originally wrote the scripture as that if for skeptics to worry about , but from what the wisdom I received from Jesus Holy Spirit this scripture is right on target ............
You understand that unbelievers will never get this as long as they are unbelievers.
Nor will rational people, as long as they remain rational.
