Is it possible that Jesus didn't speak Greek? Maybe when he said to eat his soma he had no idea how his greek-speaking audience was going to take it. (In Greek soma means body)
Soma (Sanskrit: sĂłma) or Haoma (Avestan), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sauma-, was a Vedic ritual drink of importance among the early Indo-Iranians, and the subsequent Greater Indian and Greater Iranian cultures. It is frequently mentioned in the Rigveda, whose Soma Mandala contains 114 hymns, many praising its energizing qualities.
It is described as being prepared by extracting juice from the stalks of a certain plant. In both Hinduism and Zoroastrianism, the name of the drink and the plant are the same, and also personified as a divinity, the three forming a religious or mythological unity.
In the Vedas, the same word is used for both the drink and the plant. Drinking Soma produces immortality
I am the bread of life which came down from Heaven:
if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my soma (σωμα), which I will give for the life of the world.
The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his soma to eat?
Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the soma of the Son of man, and drink his wine, ye have no life in you.
From this [time] many of his disciples went away backward, and were no more walking with him,
Jesus spoke Aramaic, and probably some Hebrew. Soma is Vedic, not Greek. Are you thinking that because the New Testament was written in Greek that it would be the language of Jesus? When the New Testament was written the language of scholars was Greek.
Actually Jesus spoke Aramaic which was the language they got from the Babylon and Assyrian conquest , which most spoke up to the Islamic conquest in the middle east .........People did not speak Hebrew and people did speak Greek but it was not dominate for the Jews and the area of eastern Mediterranean as they spoke Aramaic ...........As for the bread of life represents the Spirit of God , and the blood of Jesus represents the atonement against sin
Granpa, Just did some research and see what you are saying. You posted the Vedic translation of Soma. No, Jesus would not have spoken Greek. The New Testament was written down well after his death.
Sigh. Were you being sarcastic about Jesus not speaking Greek? Tongue in cheek means without really meaning what one is saying or writing. Either you were being sarcastic, in which case I get it, or you weren't. If you weren't, then my original post stands. Is it possible that Jesus didn't speak Greek? Not only possible, he didn't. He spoke Aramaic. Why the Vedic definition of soma was thrown in your post, if you aren't being sarcastic, I don't know.
