The following was posted earlier today on City-data.com/format/bible-talk.html:

Our Elder, Bro. Mike McGee, in his last sermon, gave us an excellent explanation of Eph.2:[8] For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: [9] Not of works, lest any man should boast[10] For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
Many Protestant ministers teach that we are saved by faith alone, with no works being necessary. It is true that none of our natural good works will save us, since we read in Isaiah 64: [6] But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
So our natural works are not accepted by God and we have nothing of which we can boast. But we read in James 2: [17] Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
And as we read on in Eph. 2: [10] FOR WE ARE HIS WORKMANSHIP, CREATED IN CHRIST JESUS, WHICH GOD HATH BEFORE ORDAINED THAT WE SHOULD WALK IN THEM.
If we have truly repented, and have been given the gift of the Holy
spirit, and holdout until we die, we are qualified to enter the kingdom of heaven. [See Matt. 7:[21] Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Default Faith + Works

The simple truth is that NEITHER our faith nor our works have anything to do with our salvation because WE do NOT have anything to do with our salvation. Jesus is responsible for our salvation, period. Having faith that Jesus saved us and following His instructions to His disciples to love god and each other every day will automatically produce the works and lead to our sanctification under Christ's love for us all.

When people turn to Jesus to be saved, everything that they do is not considered works , Like repentance, prayer to God , water baptism , receiving Jesus spirit is not considered Works ........ It is when people begin to do things for Jesus and with the gifts of the Spirit of Christ were Jesus does things through His people where the Works are .................................. So then there may be people who do things for Jesus and believe that Jesus will save them because they are doing these things and fail to do the things like repentance and praying for salvation , and never receiving Jesus Holy Spirit on their life ........................................... And there are the few who will receive Jesus spirit , and even have gifts of the Spirit of Christ , but will lean to iniquity of the world and then curses from the spirit of the world will come, and faith will fail , and their salvation will fail if they do not turn around and repent , but they continue to do the Works of the gifts , as the gifts come and will stay without repentance , as Jesus leaves the gifts of the spirit in hope that they will turn around .................See you may see people start the church and they sign up for some work like usher , and they will boaster look at me, me , where they should not be given the job until they have a witness of salvation , but still encouraged to take a beginners class or bible study group to help them .....

Good works don't save us jesus saves us, but why be saved if we aren't going to do anything? Any way Jesus did say that all who wait on him will be saved.

…9 For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins. 10 Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble; 11 for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.

2 Peter 1:9-11

Two absolutes in the Bible
1. No forgiveness of sin without shedding of blood
2. No salvation without faith

The works of salvation were ALL done by Jesus Christ on the cross........HE took away the sins of the world
WE are not deity and are not qualified to remove sin from anything, including ourselves. Realize this and give ALL the glory where it belongs.....with Jesus of Nazareth

Grace is a free gift........any works or cost on our part negates the free gift

Jesus gave Paul the Gospel of grace........purchased with His holy blood......so that we could hear and believe and so that He could give us new life...........

We should do all the works mentioned in this gospel...........

1Co 15:1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand,
1Co 15:2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.
1Co 15:3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,
1Co 15:4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,

Martin Luther summed it up pretty well when he said that it's "Faith alone, but not a faith that is alone". It's the type of faith that causes good works that saves. But the works do nothing to add to your salvation.

Yeah, the raging "faith vs works" debate goes all the way back to early Christianity (Paul vs James). And the debate even ended up with a body count during the Reformation era in Europe.

When it comes to the choosing the correct way to avoid eternal torture by a loving God after you die, you'd better be 100% right.
