I would like to believe they 'thought' they were doing the right thing....but, you know
how far that can go...aka, the Inquisition, the Crusades, etc.

Of course not when those doctrines come from Christ. No one can rewrite Christ's words.

All doctrines of the Catholic church is biblical.

I know of one protestant church that had a vote on "Is Christ truly the son of God" and they voted no. Broke the hearts of the older members who had to leave the church they attended most of their lives. We know we are in trouble when we start voting on what is true and not true in the bible.

Given to the apostles AND TO THEIR SUCCESSORS. If not, then Christianity would have only lasted as long as the original apostles were alive.

A confession is sincere when the person is sincere when they confess. If not, then the confession is null and void. The person has to sincerely want to be forgiven for their sins. God knows men's hearts.
