In addition to worthless impurities being burned away,
smelting(burning) together with a
flux can restore that portion of the metal once lost to oxidization
('rusted'), back into it's pure (unrusted/unoxidized) original state,
reversing the damage,
and ensuring nothing of the original starting metal is lost!!
