I am asking because in my bible study this morning, the guy on the video said that he believes that iniquity can be more of a thought process, or an "inside job" so to speak - an engrained character flaw perhaps? - and sin can be the outward manifestation of that.
The Difference between Iniquity, Sin, and Transgression
There are three primary Hebrew words which are often used correspondently. These words are often translated as sin, iniquity, or transgression. Chattah, which is most often translated as sin, means to miss the mark. Awon, often translated as iniquity, relates more to the inner character and points to an intentional twisting of a given standard. Pesha, often translated as transgression, is more of a willful rebellion against the given standard.

Definition of Iniquity
As found in the Bible, “iniquity” is defined as being wicked or immoral in nature or character. Primarily, it indicates "not an action, but the character of an action", and is so distinguished from "sin". Therefore, we have the phrase "the iniquity of my sin" (Psalms 32:5). Iniquity can be described as the essence of wrongdoing or evil, while sin is this quality actually enacted in the world.
yup - things like pride, lust, gluttony, anger (wrath), envy, greed, sloth (laziness) - that can lead to further/habitual sin, if not overcome.
We can ask/receive forgiveness for sin(s),
but remain slaves to these iniquity (and further sinning) if we do not overcome them by graces/virtues given to us from God and put into practice by us,
in cooperation with His graces.

Yep, It’s about getting the balance right
Not wanting what we don’t own and are not entitled to, realising our own limitations, etc
Likely you are using the King James Version of the Bible, which uses 17th century English. I think you realize that when that word is found in the Bible it is referring to acts which are performed against God's law. In modern English that is called sin. Modern Bibles seem to favor sin. For example the first usage of the word is found in Gen 15:16 and the New International version renders it this way: In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.”

The thing is, "sin" and "iniquity" are two different words. I believe they have slightly different meanings. It would behoove us to figure out how they differ instead of just assuming they mean the same thing.

Yes, I agree
They are related, but they do not mean the same thing
Language is fluid and complex and relational ....
