Most of modern Christianity has overlooked the fact that there are two "rests" being discussed in the fourth chapter of Hebrews!

Rest #1. The rest we are to enter:

"...while the promise of entering his rest remains, let us fear lest any of you be judged to have failed to reach it." Heb 4:1

Rest #2. The sabbath rest:

"...And God rested on the seventh day from all His works." Heb 4:4

"So then, there remains a sabbath rest for the people of God." Heb 4:9

What they have failed to notice is that those who enter God's rest (Rest #1) are those who keep the sabbath rest (Rest #2)

All you have to do to understand the two rests and their relationship to each other is to listen to what the Scriptures say and let the Bible define itself.

Please take a moment to look at Hebrews 4:9 again in its entirety:

"So then, there remains a sabbath rest (#2) for the people of God, FOR whoever enters God's rest (#1) also ceases from his labors, AS GOD DID FROM HIS."

Now the question is: How did God cease from His labors? The answer has been carefully supplied by the author of Hebrews in verse 4:4 above...

"And God rested on the seventh day from all his works."

If you do not REST on the seventh day from all your labors (Rest #2), then you will not enter God's REST. (Rest #1)

In their search for "liberty" from the law of God, they have completely missed the contextual message of Hebrews Chapters 3 & 4.

That message warns you not to harden your heart through disobedience and rebellion to the commandments of God.

"Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, that no one fall by the same sort of disobedience. Hebrews 4:11

That is my message to all who have been taught that they no longer have to keep the sabbath day holy...

Donna Kupp

"And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the Commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ." Rev 12:17 (KJV)

The dragon is anti-Christian power that opposes the testimony of Jesus Christ (The ruler of the Kingdom of God) and those people who obey Him.

I am a Child of God, My Father is a King, and I am washed in the Blood of the Lamb. It doesn't matter if I rest on Sunday or not I am going to be resting with him in Paradise one of these days. Glory to God!!!

Pssst...hey Donna, it's the Sabbath, the 7th day, and you're up busy on the computer, not resting.

Does that mean you've willfully sinned, and are now condemned forever?

"Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, that no one fall by the same sort of disobedience.
Hebrews 4:11"
PS...Do you literally take this to mean to rest on the Sabbath?

donna,

this one was too easy to rebutt. Jesus spoke and said
Luke: 14:3 Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath? and he took him and healed them. ( he performed work)

then He answered them, saying, which of you having a donkey or an ox that has fallen into a pit , will not immediately pull Him out on the sabbath?

ARGUE OVER THIS SPOKEN BY JESUS CHRIST

Luke 16 "the law and the prophets were until John. since that time the kingdom of god has been preached."

SEEMS PRETTY SIMPLE TO ME, KIND OF LIKE MATTHEW 6

Mark 2:24 and the Pharisees said, "look why do they do what is not lawful on the sabbath?"

Jesus said: " the sabbath was made for man , not man for the sabbath. therefore the son of man is Lord of the Sabbath.

Jesus Christ through the shedding of blood has atoned for violations of the "law" Jesus came to preach against the law of Moses the Pharisees and scribes so zealously treid to prosecute him for violating.

the Hebews discourse and that 'rest" is actually the writer referring to the rest of the Israelties having been freed from egypt. I think it is good thing to rest on sunday, if I can. As a pilot, I work on sundays. do you think I'm unsaved because I work on sundays?

Heb 3:6 sets the tone:

" But Christ as a son over His own house, whose house WE ARE if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end."

Donna, that is an assurance from the writer about Jesus and us.

in verse 3:19, the writer sums up this discourse about the israelites
" So we see that they (the Isrealites) could not enter in (the rest) because of unbelief.

here is what that hope is:
Rom5
" We glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverence, and perseverence character, and character hope, and hope does not disapoint.

WHY?

because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the holy spirit who was given to us. vs5

one thing for sure, donna , you have me pouring into this awesome book to reread these simple truths about salvation over and again.

thanks

Donna, entering into His rest is having your strength by quiteness and confidence; concerning ourselves with the Law (instead of simply abiding in Him to fulfill the law) is not exactly resting.

Your recent posts suggest there's striving instead of resting.

In love.

Not resting on Sunday is not an issue. Sunday (day of the sun) is not the Sabbath. The Sabbath is on the 7th day, which is sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. This is the only day that Yahweh sanctified and made Holy, not Sunday. The transition to Sunday was by decree of Constantine. Even the Vatican admits that there is no Scriptural authority for the change.

James Cardinal Gibbons, Archbishop of Baltimore (1877-1921), in a signed letter.
"Is Saturday the seventh day according to the Bible and the Ten Commandments? I answer yes. Is Sunday the first day of the week and did the Church change the seventh day -Saturday - for Sunday, the first day? I answer yes . Did Christ change the day'? I answer no!
"Faithfully yours, J. Card. Gibbons"
The Catholic Mirror, official publication of James Cardinal Gibbons, Sept. 23, 1893.
"The Catholic Church, . . . by virtue of her divine mission, changed the day from Saturday to Sunday."
Catholic Virginian Oct. 3, 1947, p. 9, art. "To Tell You the Truth."
"For example, nowhere in the Bible do we find that Christ or the Apostles ordered that the Sabbath be changed from Saturday to Sunday. We have the commandment of God given to Moses to keep holy the Sabbath day, that is the 7th day of the week, Saturday. Today most Christians keep Sunday because it has been revealed to us by the[Roman Catholic] church outside the Bible."

Since grammjr has so sweetly told me I do not know anything about the Sabbath, I thought I would bump this back to the top, so Donna can explain exactly what it means to rest on the Sabbath. Especially since she wrote (bold mine):

"If you do not REST on the seventh day from all your labors (Rest #2), then you will not enter God's REST. (Rest #1)"

Seems clear to me that you three believe you should not do anything on the Sabbath, and yet, she was on the computer laboring away.

A couple of people, including myself, are still interested in hearing the answer to this. Was sin involved in this woman posting a thread about resting on the Sabbath, at 11am on the Sabbath?

You're spirit can be at rest while typing - I'm sure you'd have to feel her pulse to know if she was resting or not.
