Well there are two kinds of "proof". One is based on the mind and one is based on the soul. I know in my soul, which knows truth better than the mind, that what that commentary stated is true. Even Luke has stated that what he supposedly wrote in the bible is not true. Now, I don't adhere to the bible and I'm no genius at history, however, I do know that regarding the bible, it is not 100% truth and is not the word of God.
And, I don't really have to prove anything. Look it up yourself. Oh, wait, if it's not in the bible it can't be true, right?
Well, then I will leave you alone and speak rather to those that are interested from the Christian Bible perspective.
Don't forget, that "marriageable" in that day and time not only meant to be of a certain age, but to also be a virgin. If you were not a virgin, you were not "marriageable".
I'm trying to determine if you give any credence to anything other than that one Greek word in relation to what the Bible has to say about Mary being a virgin, because there are many indirect references to the fact that she was a virgin....It says that Joseph was going to put her away privately (because he knew HE hadn't done it!....and because non-virgins were not "marriageable"), and that after the angel told him to marry her and he did, he did not "know" her until after Jesus was born. And when the angel visited Mary and told her what was going to happen, she said, "How can this be, seeing I know not a man?"

"Reverend", as this discussion is about the meaning of words in the Bible, I don't understand why you don't just stay out of it, since you don't believe in the Bible. Why would you even want to get in on it? We all understand that you don't believe the Bible....'nuff said on this thread.
What's going to happen is that everyone will just ignore what you say because it has no bearing on this discussion.
I heard that Mary had to give the 'ok' before all of this, Jesus being born laid upon Mary's free-will to accept the job of delivering him. That always bothered me. Whether or not this is true, I don't know but it makes sense because we all have free will, although other 'people' may intrude on it God would not do that.

Good post. I hadn't even presumed to go that route yet. Was still working on the translation of the word but that definately lends weight to it being "virgin".

I would suggest then, the next time you start a thread and only want biblers in the discussion, please say so. Otherwise, you'll get all kinds of points of view from other christians and nonchristians.
A post on another thread debated that Jesus was born of a virgin and that the Greek Word parthenos only refers to a young "marriageable" woman and does not refer to a "virgin". So this is a thread to debate the meaning of parthenos.
What say you?
Paul
yes. she was a virgin.
