One could call a fork a spoon but it wouldn't do so well on soup.

Advertising is not "patronage" no matter how one would try to torture it.

How is Fifth Third's patronage of the ballet different from its advertising at Great American Ball Park?

Fifth Third expects a direct return on such as advertising at GABP. As you say that is advertising dollars spent under an advertising budget. They are not there to support GABP but themselves.

Money spent to support the ballet is entirely different and comes out of a different pocket. That would come out of a fund loosely labeled public patronage from which no direct return is expected.

Well put KJ. Creators of entertainment that attracts advertising dollars do so because people want to see the entertainment and the advertisers want to have those people see their ads. For the most part, the advertisers could not care less what the entertainment is if it attracts the right eyeballs.

My point is that symphony and ballet and to a lesser extent, live theater do not attract viewers and listeners and require patronage subsidies in addition to their exorbitant ticket prices. Now they want us to pay a billion dollars or so to renovate their venue, Music Hall. Let's just let them go and move on. We don't have barbershop quartets or local wrestling matches much anymore either.
