Grits' ubiquity starts to wear off right where progmac said, in Lexington. School cafeterias, for instance, routinely offer them there (and so do restaurants) but that mostly changes starting in Georgetown. The one place I've enjoyed 'em in a Cincinnati-area eatery was at The Grand Finale in Glendale, where they're infused with cheese and are a perennial menu staple at the famous Sunday brunch buffet. Eaten plain? Nothin' doin' for this Northerner raised by South Carolinians. At the very least they have to be swimming in butter.

A cousin who lived her entire life in NC was once befuddled by an entry she'd seen in a novelty book about "talking Southern." How could it be that the word "grits" is properly pronounced with two syllables? My answer popped up right away: "GREE-yits! That's two syllables! " She blushed deep red over having had to have a Yankee-bred relative school her in her native drawl.
And here's a lesson for "all y'all" in T-shirt and bumper sticker translation when you're below the Mason-Dixon line. The popular "I LOVE GRITS" expression doesn't apply to the breakfast food. "GRITS" stands for Girls Raised in the South.

To the OP, I suggest looking into where some good "soul food" restaurants are in Detroit. You're bound to find the hominy derivative you seek in one of them.

I had Cincinnati Chili for lunch. I haven't had Grits in 50 years. I'm with Mike.

Sunday Brunch at The Grand Finale is awesome...one of the best places in the region imo.

Maybe you'll like it in its newest form...as a topping on a chili filled deep dish corn meal pizza!

From the menu of the new Pi Pizzeria downtown:
CINCY-PI-WAY
Our take on a Cincinnati classic. Skyline chili, Glier's goetta, cheddar, white onions on our deep dish cornmeal crust.
