Hey all,

I'm from Kansas City and as most of you know, The state line of Kansas and Missouri runs right through the middle of the metro area. This has its advantages and disadvantages and creates many people who really like one state but dislike the other. We also have Kansas and Missouri competing against each other for businesses and many times one state will offer a tax free incentive for a company to move across the state line so that state can gain "new jobs" while the region does not at all. How do Kentucky and Ohio deal with each other? Is the Cincinnati area good with this or are their issues? The Cincinnati metro area is very similar sized to Kansas City so I find this interesting to compare the two cities.

Ohio and Kentucky are also separated by a physical boundary--the Ohio river--instead of an imaginary line, so the separation is more distinct. NKY is composed of small, old river towns. The Newport area has been redeveloped and has a nice riverscape and aquarium, but I think the region compliments Cinci rather than detracts from it. When people fly out of "Cincinnati", they are actually flying out of Kentucky, since that is where the airport is located. I am not aware of an businesses playing musical states.

There's been a couple businesses that have moved from one side of the river to another, but not as much as you would think. In general the relationship seems to be good.

Joe has an excellent point - there is a river to help with the separation. So you don't have the Banks directly butting up against Newport on the Levee, for instance, which would nearly be the case if the river was not there. But plenty of Cincy people go to NOTL and vice versa for NKY people to the Banks, etc.

Zumbiel Packging and U.S. Playing Card Co. are two off the top of my head. Wasn't Corporex originally in Cincinnati? I'm sure there are more that have bolted to Kentucky's fair shores over the past 30 years. And there are others that have done the reverse.

Conversely, Omnicare moved from NKY to Cincinnati:
Omnicare will move to Cincinnati - Cincinnati Business Courier
And it seems like there was another major company that moved too, one that moved more recently.

Right now, KY's business climate, supposedly, is worse than Ohio's although I don't know how the figure was measured. After all, it's a Forces list, but Chief Executive, Business Insider, etc. all report the same. OH is considered better than KY at the moment, but part of it may be pure politics (we have a Republican Governor, Kasich, and they have a Democratic governor). The info is here:

I cannot speak for Kansas City but there is very little natural pressure for a business that wants to be in Cincinnati to locate into NKY, rents aren't that high, parking's not that hard, and there is plenty of sprawl capacity to the north. Dragging the workforce over the bridge is a disincentive to hiring, so there does't seem to be much natural competition between the areas. Now entertainment dollars are another thing entirely.

My thoughts as a native Central Ohioan on the state rivalries:

-The vast majority of native Kentuckians aren't the biggest fans of Ohio---many have historically been fearful of Over-the-Rhine----Kentuckians are rural by nature----a heavy black population in OTR is intimidating to them.

- The majority of native Cincinnatians view Northern Kentucky as part of the Cinti Metro area, and don't have any major problem with KY. There's a big contingent of Kentuckians in Cinti who moved here for work, but their favorite college team (Big Blue Nation) did not change.

- The vast majority of native Ohioans raised north of Wilmington absolutely despise Kentucky. Level of hatred in descending order: *ichigan, Notre Dame, Kentucky, West Virgina. I've learned to temper things----but the sight of a blue Kentucky sweatshirt still raises my blood pressure.

Kentuckians love Cincinnati. Most are Reds fans and have been listening to Reds on Radio since they were children. They come here for shopping, special events and culture. The only rivalry is UC Basketball which is not a big deal since about 1 in 1,000 from Northern Kentucky have any affiliation with UK other than being a BB fan. High school sports are more important in KY than college.

Complete opposite experience for me in every aspect....and I normally agree with you 100%.

KY folks like the Reds and Bengals because KY doesn't have elite level professional sports.

Shopping, special events and culture---I don't really partake in these things to any meaningful degree, so you could be right in this area, although I am extremely doubtful...culture? Maybe, but only because they don't have something like Music Hall or Aronoff Center. Shopping? There may not be malls in KY, so maybe that's true? I'm not sure...I don't see plays and I don't shop at brick-and-mortar stores.

High school sports are important in KY than UK? UK is a religion in KY....I've not seen that level of devotion to their high schools, but you might have a different experience.

Here's my experience:

1. Reds/Bengals games: you see a lot of Big Blue shirts despite neither team having blue. My view is they are trying to make a statement.

2. I have a customer of one of KY's largest privately owned companies---native Ohioan---met his KY born wife---said she would marry him, but only if he agree they would live in KY.

3. I can see the fear in KY people's eyes when I bring up OTR.

4. KY folks talk a lot about the dysfunction of Cincinnati City Council and how horrible the Democrats have messed up the city's finances. My view is they take great pleasure in seeing how moronic the Democrats are. I moved to Cinti about 2 years after Levee was built---it was extraordinarily embarassing as a native born Ohioan when I compared KY riverfront to Ohio riverfront. Fortunately that's changed---but the shame lingers.

5. The KY folks I work with on the Ohio side make it very clear that they only work in Ohio. Everything else they do is done in KY. They take the TANK over in the morning and take it back as soon as the work day is over. Nothing else done in OH.

6. Several KY women I know (who live in Ohio) made sure their children were born in St. E's which is not a quality hospital---trust me on that one.
