anything after that....and people are naming like the 1 city in their state everybody knows...then listing a bunch of other MSAs that most people around the country barely know of if at all.
His mistake was he assumed that the average City Data poster would have basic geographical knowledge of their own country.

Yes, I learned my state capitals, 37-38 years ago. In the next few decades I learned much more that has actually had an impact on my life.
I don't think the fact that I don't remember some state capitals had any impact on my ability to contribute to the thread. In fact I think it may have given me a better perspective to be able to understand what the OP was looking for, which was cities that the average person on the street would be knowledgeable about.
Those that have committed all the state capitals to memory, I commend you for that but does it at all relate to what the OP was asking for if they are not a city that the average person would remember along with 2 other cities from it's respective state?
Yes, I know Albany is the capital of NY and I know every other city in NY posted in the thread, along with most every one in the NE that was mentioned but I am from NY.
Is the average person from Montana going to know where Binghamton is?
I would say no, they wouldn't. They would more likely know Bozeman but Average Joe in Arkansas probably wouldn't. And that is what the OP was asking for.
Let's change NC cities- Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, Winston-Salem. All of these cities have 225,000 people or more and all in a metropolitan area with more than 1.5 million people. Not to mention they usually fall on the list of up and coming cities and fastest growing cities with great education and quality of living. Also boasting professional sports, national concerts, sports tournaments, festivals and well known companies. Sorry, but some of those other cities you know can not claim that.
I know it's no California, but Georgia actually has some pretty diverse cities that most people don't discuss a whole lot. Of course there are Atlanta and Savannah, but Augusta is bigger than Savannah. Then there are also Columbus, Macon, Athens, Tifton/Valdosta, Warner Robins, Rome, and Gainesville. Some great cities with not a whole lot of press, due to Atlanta's size and Savannah's fame.
