Yeah I guess it could. LA loses a lot less without DTLA than NYC loses without Manhattan.

Brooklyn is 2.6 million people in 71 sq. miles. Queens is 2.2 million people in 109 sq. miles. That's 4.8 million people in 180 sq. miles. Los Angeles is 3.7 million people in 460 sq. miles. You guys talk about how much of a beast LA is and how it's so large that we can't possibly fathom of its depths, but what does that then say about NYC when you can take just two of its Boroughs and get 1.1 million more people than the second largest city in the country (in far less area)?

What a bold proclamation.
Subjective and maybe hyperbole, but one might be able to make a case for it. A lot of people have the idea New York City = Manhattan and everything else is sleepy without much going on. There's plenty activities in NYC outside of Manhattan (good ethnic restaurants, music events, some museums, interesting architecture, shopping, etc.) But it's hard to compare, since a lot of the jobs, and some shopping and entertainment is Manhattan. It's hard to separate cities into pieces.

Yeah, I'd enjoy just driving around NYC (on highways) more than walking around Hollywood. It's cool to just admire the city from different angles, even the Bronx and Queens. Plus, once you take a walk down certain sections of Jerome Avenue, etc., it's a much better people watching experience (and culinary experience) than what you find in nearly all American cities anyway.

You aren't going to have time for that on your lunch break

If you've commuted from LI into the city by either car, bus or train, then LA will be much easier. Honestly anywhere would be an improvement over that.
