I'll choose Puerto Rico. #1 the cost of leaving. #2 The tax rate. #3 the extra charge in credit card or ATM. #4 Much better quality of hotels. #5 Super treatment. #6 El Yunke. #7 it goes on, mountain, rivers, hiking, beach's, caves, lagoon's I can keep on mentioning. I've been twice in Honolulo and once at Maui. But when I visited Puerto Rico, I felt like I was in paradise. We are living the life, my wife says this is paradise. I encourage you to visit bought places. That's why they call it; La Isla del encanto!
Never been to PR, but would love to visit. For living, I will take Hawaii, as it is safer, less bugs/big storms, not as humid, and has a cleaner and wealthier feel. Plus, I just love the Asian-Polynesian culture more than the Caribbean-Latin onem though both are nice.

Hawaii is one of the highest income states in the country; Puerto Rico is a third-world country.
I rest my case.
But it is also one of the highest, if not the highest, COL living state in the country. This means actual buying power might not be great. Many responses in this thread appears to be based on a premise of unlimited economic resources at your disposal. However, we all know that is not how the world works.
I choose Puerto Rico, it's less expensive than Hawaii and not super isolated, it's a short flight to the mainland or other Caribbean islands. Plus I prefer latin culture and food over Asian/Hawaiian.
Hawaii is nice too though.
