I've lived in/around Baltimore all my life, and I have NEVER heard anybody reference DC when "going to the city." What you said is not believeable at all.

Going to the city has always meant going to Baltimore City.

Yea, In Baltimore it's "the city" or "the county" referring to either Bmore city or Bmore county. Around the DC Beltway is once you hear people start referring to DC as "the city".

In the Bay Area, people refer to SF as "The City" more than anyplace I've ever lived or visited outside NY. When I lived in NoVA, Washington was often referred to as "DC", "The District", or "Downtown" more than "The City".

Not Oakland or San Jose, been to both several times. I also wouldn't be surprised if my career takes me to the Northeast and I end up going to Baltimore frequently. I don't know if I'll ever have a reason to be in Fort Worth, so I'll pick there.

I don't know much about it, but it's often talked about here as the most quintessentially Texan city, so I'd be interested to see why.

I know it's a MD/DC thing. We say "the city" when referring to DC. Some say "the District" too.
