Dallas has some horrible ghetto areas. The worst is South Dallas. There's run down houses everywhere! My mama grew up in South Dallas and moved to Oak Cliff in the late 70s. Now, Oak Cliff is kinda run down, but it isn't like South Dallas. The only nice area in South Dallas is Fair Park. On Hatcher st and US 175 (SM Wright Fwy). You will see nothing but run down and abandoned apartment complexes. Recently DART built new rail lines in South Dallas. Hopefully, the rail lines will create new developments. Minyard is the only full service grocery store in South Dallas. I haven't seen a shopping center in South Dallas with any clothing stores. Mostly all the shopping centers have Beauty Supply and wig stores, Family Dollar stores, Barber shops, liquor stores, and Pawn Shops. The Rodchester Park and Cadillac heights area of South Dallas have houses built in a flood plain. Every time there's heavy rain the area floods. So the city built a levees and pump stations to protect the area from flooding. (My cousin lives in Rodchester Park, right behind her house is a levee and pump station) I will try to post pics of the area later.

When I was in my early twenties (1999) I drove through Camden New Jersey - at the time that place scared the bejeezus out of me, first ghetto I had ever laid eyes on.

Santa Fe.

The yuppie ghetto is horrible there. Nothing but fake adobe buildings and overpriced art galleries selling ceramic coyotes and pseudo-Southwestern-style restaurants with $12 margaritas.

That's a pretty ignorant statement. Seeing as California cities top the highest unemployment rate cities list. California is also undoubtedly the Tigris and Euphrates of the most dangerous and well-known Black, Latino, Asian and Pacific Islander gangs in the country outside of Chicago. Nowhere in America, other than maybe Chicago, are gangs of all races more visible than in California cities. Kids in Baltimore, New York and New Jersey try to emulate L.A. based Bloods and Crips by starting their own bastardized gang sets named after streets they've never seen in CA (i.e. Grape Street Crips in NJ and Tree Top Piru Bloods in Baltimore) and pockets of the DC Metro area has its serious problems with Central American gangs, like MS-13 and 18th St, that were born in Southern California. Even though California is pretty, nowhere in America are you more likely to get your car stolen. Eight of the top ten highest car theft metro areas are in California.

The 20 Most Unemployed Cities In America

What a city or ghetto "looks like" has nothing to do with how dangerous it is. I believe every ghetto is the same because every ghetto has the same social problems. However, some cities are more dangerous and ghetto as a whole. Three of the top ten most dangerous cities in America are in CA. Only one, Camden, is on the East Coast. West Coast cities like Oakland, Richmond and Compton aren't "nice places" because they look well-maintained and middle class by urban East Coast standards. Oakland consistently rates as being a more dangerous city than Baltimore in most categories.

As of July 2011, South Central LA had over 90 homicides for the first half of the year. That's higher than Camden, NJ homicide rate in a whole year.

Yeah but Camden is a large town, not a city. Philly's count is 195 as of now! L.A. with such a larger population but half the actual murders of Philly. Sad for Philly, really.

Camden. The place scares and fascinates me all at the same time. I've been meaning to take a ride over and visit the Walt Whitman house - even in his time apparently many other literary figures such as Oscar Wilde visited and asked him why in the world he wanted to live there!

What?

South Central LA is listed as having a population of over 550,000.

So 90 homicides would be a rate of under 16/per 100k for the 1st half of the year. Whole year would be under 32/per 100k.

Camden NJ averages about 50/per 100k per year.
