New york, la and chicago fall short in the downtown department. New york also falls short in the airport terminal department. In other words, new york and la are not world class cities. That's the way it is.

DC
Atlanta
SF
Dallas
Boston
Houston

They base their findings on a ton of factors (none of which include arbitrary provincialism), which is why I find them to be the most convincing. However no list of factors is exhaustive, so I'm sure plugging in different ones would yield different results.

To above poster: Roswell, LOL. I did get a kick out of that. That may make the list for intergalactic American cities.
I agree with this. Not sure if your second tier are in order, but I'd move Atlanta and Dallas to bottom of 2nd tier. Otherwise, it's perfect.

It is not like the 4 million is spread out evenly.

If that picture up there is not sprawling then you guys have some apologizing to do to many sunbelt cities

The metro are of Recife is a single family homes stretching for 1000 sq miles and you don't think that is sprawling so you just have a silly bias against sunbelt cities.
Subtract the city pop & land area of Houston and the remaining metro has a density of 381 ppsm.

For Dallas: 579 ppsm

Atlanta: 607 ppsm

Los Angeles: 2,547 ppsm

Recife: 2,639 ppsm

Before the brigade comes to tell me about how much vacant space is included in some of the Sunbelt MSAs, take a look at the satellite view of Recife. It's surrounded by mountains and forest.

I don't believe any apologies are in order.
