personally, i think a world class city should have following criteria: Vibrant downtown, world class airport terminal, diversity, good population, good transportation, world class industry and most of the big city amenities.
New york, la and chicago fall short in the downtown department. New york also falls short in the airport terminal department. In other words, new york and la are not world class cities. That's the way it is.
I'm sticking with what the experts say. This may have been already hashed out, but the only alpha cities in the U.S. according to the professionals, are New York (A++), Chicago (A), and Los Angeles (A-)
2nd Tier Beta cities:
DC
Atlanta
SF
Dallas
Boston
Houston
They base their findings on a ton of factors (none of which include arbitrary provincialism), which is why I find them to be the most convincing. However no list of factors is exhaustive, so I'm sure plugging in different ones would yield different results.

How does a troll make it to 393 post.....impressive
Recife has 1.6M in only 85 sq miles and the 2.5M in almost 1000sq miles.
It is not like the 4 million is spread out evenly.
If that picture up there is not sprawling then you guys have some apologizing to do to many sunbelt cities

The metro are of Recife is a single family homes stretching for 1000 sq miles and you don't think that is sprawling so you just have a silly bias against sunbelt cities.
Subtract the city pop & land area of Houston and the remaining metro has a density of 381 ppsm.
For Dallas: 579 ppsm
Atlanta: 607 ppsm
Los Angeles: 2,547 ppsm
Recife: 2,639 ppsm
Before the brigade comes to tell me about how much vacant space is included in some of the Sunbelt MSAs, take a look at the satellite view of Recife. It's surrounded by mountains and forest.
