New Orleans isn't much more dangerous than an average US city.
"The city's murder rate is 20% higher than Detroit and nine times higher than cities like New York and San Francisco. The number of killings in the Big Easy jumped to 199 in 2011 from 175 the year before."

Did you click the link? I only quoted part of what the page said and provided a link for more info. The link gave a crime index defined as a "weighted average of six crime categories murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and motor vehicle theft. The national rate is 1 and any number higher than that indicates a higher than average incidence of crime." The crime index for New Orleans is 2.84, or nearly three times the national rate.
From an economic standpoint, Austin is the most attractive, while New Orleans is the most entertaining.
