looks like they used the 2010 census results and multiplied by the metro's respective rate of growth over the past decade and added the figure to the 2010 numbers
Well, mostly. I noticed they had Providence losing a slight amount, while they gained over the past decade.

Raleigh's up 52,501 and two places to 46th. Combined with the Durham/Chapel Hill MSA, the bulk of the Triangle's CSA is up 64,503. This pace puts the Raleigh/Durham CSA at about 2.55 million by Census 2020 (inclusive of the Dunn Micropolitan area as currently counted).
At current paces, just the Raleigh/Cary MSA within the Triangle's CSA will probably also pass this decade the following MSAs: Hartford, Richmond, Oklahoma City, Memphis, Louisville and possibly Jacksonville.
Atlanta better hurry up with the growth rate because the southern cities are leaving them behind.
