Yes, this is my favorite for New York. And I agree with your last sentence. Atlanta's too good of a city for ppl to be referring to it as "A-Town."

I just moved to Denver. I always liked the nickname "Mile High City" but I didn't realize until I got here that the official elevation really is 5280 ft, exactly a mile high. I figured it was just a general reference to the city being close to the mountains.

I'm from DC...the only true nickname that came to mind is "The District." That's not too bad.

The best-known nickname for St. Louis is "Gateway to the West", sometimes shortened to "Gateway City". I've also heard "Arch City", "Mound City" (pays homage to the Native American mound builders), "Red Brick City", and "The Lou" (hipsters seem to like that one).

seattle also has "jet city"

in a very small city in upstate NY you have Corning - Crystal City

it's interesting to see which ones derived from what locals say and how it's referred to as opposed to what was drawn up by a visitors bureau in order to paint the city in a positive light and/or highlight parts of the city

They all kinda suck, except I like "City of Lakes".
Another one was Flour City (which Mpls took from Rochester NY in the 1800s when Mpls flour mills outproduced Rochester's) Rochester then changed theirs to Flower City, after landscape nurseries that flourished there.

You know what, there is another little story right under that...you never will hear Houston being referred to as "America's Space City" outside of Houston & Texas.

The move of NASA to Houston in 1961 was politically motivated & for some reason people can't seem to get past that. Kids growing up today never hear it because they weren't around in the 60's, 70's, & 80's when space exploration was at its peak.

Most commonly, the national news refers to Houston simply as "America's 4th largest city" or the "Bayou City".

Houston was & always will be the first word uttered from the lunar surface of the Moon.

Its right up there with Christopher Columbus discovering America IMO.

I love that nickname... It sounds like a place Homer Simpson would get excited about... "Mmmm, bacon."

Imagine if the Bengals were called the Porkers...
